Gemini Free vs Paid After October 9: What Each Plan Gets
Is Gemini free or paid now? Both, but the gap between Gemini free vs paid plans grew on October 9, 2026: free accounts can no longer pick a model. Most answers now come from Flash-Lite, the lightest model, and Pro is only guaranteed on AI Pro and AI Ultra. AI Plus subscribers are losing Pro too, on a date Google sends to each of them by email.
- The free tier now only offers Auto, and most answers come from Flash-Lite.
- AI Plus ($4.99/month) is being limited to Flash and Flash-Lite; Google emails each subscriber the date.
- Pro, the 1M-token context window and 5 TB of storage stay on AI Pro ($19.99/month).
- Turning off smart model selection makes every free answer use Flash-Lite.
What changed on October 9
On October 9, 2026, Google updated how models are assigned in the Gemini app, and free users feel it most. The model menu no longer offers Flash or Pro on the free tier; there is only Auto. According to Google’s help center, most prompts now go to Flash-Lite, while prompts that need deeper reasoning may be routed to Flash or Pro.
Google does not say how often Auto escalates to Pro. If you switch off smart model selection in settings, every answer comes from Flash-Lite. The same update replaced the old “Extended” option with three effort levels: Low, Medium and High.
On the paid side, AI Pro and AI Ultra keep Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. AI Plus is being limited to Flash-Lite and Flash. Google says AI Plus subscribers will get an email telling them when the change applies to their account, so there is no single public cut-off date.

Is Gemini still free?
Yes. You can keep using Gemini without a subscription, and the free tier still includes Deep Research, Canvas and Gems with a 32k-token context window. What you lose is the ability to choose the model that answers you.
Usage limits have been compute-based since May 2026: your allowance refreshes every five hours, with a weekly cap on top. Pro, Deep Research and image or video generation use it up faster.
On the free tier, Auto may hand a hard prompt to Pro, but nothing guarantees it. If you regularly need Pro for long documents, code or multi-step analysis, AI Pro is the plan that keeps it.
Gemini free vs paid: plans compared
Prices from Google’s US subscriptions page and plan details from the Gemini help center, checked on October 13, 2026:
| Feature | Free | AI Plus | AI Pro | AI Ultra |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $4.99/month | $19.99/month | from $99.99/month |
| Models | Auto (mostly Flash-Lite) | Flash-Lite and Flash (Pro being removed) | Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro |
| Usage | Standard | 2x free | 4x free | 5x Pro and up |
| Context window | 32k tokens | 128k tokens | 1M tokens | 1M tokens |
| Flow credits | None | 200 | 1,000 | 10,000+ |
| Storage | 15 GB | 400 GB | 5 TB | 20 TB+ |
Deep Think is listed for Ultra only, and Ultra is the plan for regular video generation with Veo 3.1. Local prices vary by country, so check Google’s subscriptions page for yours.
Google’s subscriptions page still lists Pro for AI Plus, while the help center says Pro is being removed from that plan. The date that applies to your account will be in the email from Google.
Google AI Plus vs Pro: which one do you need?
The gap between the two plans is no longer just about limits; it is about which model you can use. Start with one question: do you need Pro regularly?
- AI Plus is enough for everyday questions, emails, short drafts and summaries, where Flash is fast and capable.
- AI Pro is worth it for long reports, research papers, coding and analysis across many files. A 1M-token context window can hold hundreds of pages at once.
- For video, AI Pro includes 1,000 Flow credits and a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial; heavy video work belongs on Ultra.
- Storage: the 5 TB in AI Pro is shared across Google Drive, Gmail and Photos.
Getting better results on the free tier
- Break the work into steps. Flash-Lite does best with short, specific prompts, so ask one thing at a time instead of five at once.
- Feed long documents in parts. The free tier’s context window is 32k tokens; a longer text that is not split may lose its ending.
- Use Deep Research where it matters. It works on the free tier for questions that need many sources, but it uses up your allowance faster.
- Double-check what matters. See which model answered in the response details, and compare anything about money, health or law with a second source.
How to see which model answered you
- In the Gemini app or at gemini.google.com, tap the model name below the chat box.
- On a paid plan, pick Flash-Lite, Flash or Pro and, if you like, an effort level (Low, Medium, High). A lock icon means the model needs a higher plan.
- On the free tier you will only see Auto. To turn smart selection off, go to Menu → Settings → Usage limits and use the toggle at the bottom; every answer then comes from Flash-Lite.
- To check which model wrote a reply, open “More” under the answer and view the response details.
Paid plans do not stop when you hit the limit: Gemini carries on with Flash-Lite until your allowance refreshes. Pro and higher effort levels drain it faster.
A lower-cost way to get AI Pro
AI Pro is billed monthly and renews automatically. The 18-month AI Pro package in our store works differently: you receive an activation link, and when you open it the plan is added to the Google account you are signed in with, for 18 months. No card is needed and nothing is charged when the period ends.
Google Gemini AI Pro – 18 MonthsPre-order$2.50Use the link within 12 hours of delivery. If your Google account already has an active Google One or Google AI subscription, the activation may conflict, so check your current plan before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini free now or paid?
Both. Gemini still has a free tier, but since October 9, 2026 it only offers Auto, which sends most prompts to Flash-Lite and only sometimes to Flash or Pro. Paid plans let you choose the model.
Can I still use Gemini Pro for free?
Auto may route some demanding prompts to Pro, but there is no guarantee and Google does not publish how often it happens. To pick Pro whenever you want, you need AI Pro or AI Ultra.
When will AI Plus lose the Pro model?
Google has not published one date for everyone; it emails each AI Plus subscriber when the change takes effect for their account. After that, AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash.
What is Gemini Flash-Lite?
Flash-Lite is the lightest and fastest model in the Gemini family. It handles quick questions and everyday tasks well; Flash and Pro do better on long documents, code and multi-step analysis.
What is the difference between Google AI Plus and AI Pro?
AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and is moving to Flash and Flash-Lite with a 128k context window and 400 GB of storage. AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and keeps Pro, a 1M-token context window, 1,000 Flow credits and 5 TB of storage.
Does the 18-month AI Pro package work on my own account?
Yes. The plan is added to the Google account you are signed in with when you open the activation link, and the account is not shared with anyone. The link must be used within 12 hours of delivery.
