Gemini Gems to Skills: What Changes on November 17 and How to Prepare
The move from Gemini Gems to skills hits personal Google accounts on November 17, 2026, when Gems become read-only, and finishes on December 17, 2026, when they are removed from the Gemini app. Google says it will convert Gems automatically, but audio, video, archives and legacy Office files are left behind, and you cannot use a Gem after the first date. Instead of restating the announcement, this guide maps who is affected when, what you could lose, and how to rebuild an important Gem as a skill yourself today.
- Personal accounts (18+): Gems turn read-only on November 17, 2026 and are deleted, files included, on December 17, 2026.
- Google Workspace business accounts keep working Gems until at least March 1, 2027; education accounts until at least June 1, 2027.
- Each skill is capped at 100 MB of files, and audio, video, archives, legacy Office formats and GitHub files do not carry over.
- Google's help center says skills do not require a Google AI subscription, but Keep Activity must be on.
- Opal and Gems made by Google Labs shut down in November and are not converted.
Gems versus skills in one paragraph
A Gem was a saved assistant profile: standing instructions plus reference files for one job, such as drafting replies in a company voice or turning lecture notes into quiz questions. You opened the Gem and held the whole conversation inside it.
Skills, which Google introduced on September 30, 2026, keep the saved instructions but drop the separate window. You type / in any chat and pick a skill, you can stack several in one request (say, a tone-of-voice skill plus a brand-guidelines skill), and Gemini can pull in an active skill on its own when your prompt matches it. Skills follow the open SKILL.md format, so a skill written for another assistant can be uploaded to Gemini, and a Gemini skill can be downloaded as a .zip and taken elsewhere.
Access has loosened since launch. When 9to5Google first spotted the migration notice on September 27, creating skills was limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google’s current help page states that skills are available without a Google AI subscription; the requirements are being 18 or older, signed in, and having Keep Activity turned on.

The timeline by account type
Dates differ sharply between personal and Workspace accounts. This table combines the Gemini Apps Help center and the Google Workspace Updates blog, checked on November 8, 2026:
| Account | November 17, 2026 | Later |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Google account, 18+ | Gems become read-only: viewable, but you cannot use, edit or create them | December 17, 2026: Gems and their files are removed |
| Personal account, under 18 | No change | Transition later; no date announced |
| Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit | Gems move to the Settings panel and keep working | No sooner than March 1, 2027: removed and auto-migrated to draft skills |
| Workspace education | Gems move to the Settings panel and keep working | No sooner than June 1, 2027: removed, also from Classroom and supported LMSs |
| Opal and Google Labs Gems | Shut down in November | Not migrated |
Workspace admins are promised at least 30 days’ notice before auto-migration, and Workspace Studio flows that use the “Ask a Gem” step stop working at the same point. Skills created in the Gemini app do not sync to Workspace apps, and Google’s October 13 update says the Workspace rollout of skills is delayed with no new date.
Is the automatic conversion enough?
Google says it will turn your Gems, plus their supported files, into skills for you. The help page, however, ties the conversion to the moment Gems are removed, while also saying Gems stop working on November 17. It does not spell out on which day a converted skill will appear in your account. If a Gem is part of your daily routine, rebuilding it by hand before November 17 is the only way to be sure there is no gap. Gems you open once a month can safely wait for the automatic pass.
Files that will not make it
According to Google’s transition page, these file types are not carried over:
- Audio and video files
- Legacy Office formats: .doc, .xls, .ppt
- Archives: .zip, .tar, .7z, .rar, .gz, .tgz
- Files added from GitHub
A skill holds at most 100 MB of files in total. If a Gem’s knowledge files exceed that, the largest ones are dropped first. Personal-account users can download their Gem files until December 17, 2026; after that the Gems and their files are gone. Resaving old .doc, .xls and .ppt files in the current Office formats before re-uploading them avoids the problem.
How to rebuild a Gem as a skill
Google documents a three-step manual process. Uploading files currently works only on the web at gemini.google.com and in the Mac app, so do this on a computer.
- Export the Gem. Open it from the sidebar (under More if it is hidden), click Edit and download every file in the Knowledge section. Create a folder named after the future skill in lowercase with hyphens, for example weekly-report, and move the files into it.
- Create the skill. In a second tab, go to Customize > Skills, choose Create > Create manually, and paste in the Gem’s name, description and instructions. Keeping both tabs side by side makes it easy to spot anything you missed.
- Add the files. If the skill needs reference files, download it as a .zip, place its SKILL.md in your folder, then use Replace skill to upload the whole folder. The folder name must match the skill name, and SKILL.md must sit at the root.
Before uploading, delete hidden files such as .DS_Store or .pyc from the folder; Google’s page lists them as a cause of failed uploads. To change a file later you re-upload the entire skill, so keep that folder as your master copy.
Writing a skill Gemini will actually use
Pasting your Gem instructions works, but automatic triggering depends on the description. Google’s advice comes down to three habits: say plainly when the skill should be used, keep the instructions short, and include an example. A description like “use when asked to draft a reply to a customer email” gives Gemini a clear signal; a vague title like “Email helper” does not.
What skills can and cannot do yet
Based on Google’s help pages, checked November 8, 2026:
| Feature | Gems | Skills |
|---|---|---|
| How you invoke it | Open a dedicated Gem chat | / in any chat, @ in tasks, or automatically |
| Several at once | No | Yes, and skills can reference other skills |
| Active limit | Not stated | 100 active at a time; deactivate one to add another |
| File allowance | Not stated | 100 MB per skill |
| Sharing | Shareable by link | Promised “in the coming weeks” |
| Portability | Gemini only | Downloadable SKILL.md package |
There are gaps. The transition page says skills do not yet work with Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning or most built-in tools such as video and music generation, and scripts that need internet access are not supported. Google’s own pages also disagree on Google Drive files and Gemini Notebook notebooks: the skill creation page describes adding them, while the transition page and the September blog post say that capability is still coming. If you do not see the option, upload the files from your device.
Edge cases worth checking
- Keep Activity off: skills require it. If you disabled it for privacy, decide whether you are willing to turn it back on before relying on converted skills.
- Work or school sign-in: if your Google account comes from an employer or university, the personal-account dates above do not apply; watch for your admin’s notice instead.
- Shared Gems: links you handed to colleagues will stop working with the Gem, and skill sharing has not shipped. Save the instructions and files somewhere your team can reach.
- Under-18 accounts: Gems stay put for now; Google has not dated their transition.
Skills themselves are free to use, so there is no reason to change plans just to keep your Gems. If you already need higher Gemini usage limits for other work, the related option in our store is below; the package covers what its product page states.

Frequently asked questions
Are Gemini Gems being deleted?
On personal Google accounts, yes. Gems become read-only on November 17, 2026 and are removed from the Gemini app on December 17, 2026. Google says it will convert them, with supported files, into skills automatically; unsupported files are not transferred.
Do I need Google AI Pro to use skills?
According to Google's current help page, no: skills are available without a Google AI subscription. You need to be 18 or older, signed in with a personal account, and have Keep Activity turned on. Early coverage in late September described skill creation as limited to Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Which Gem files will not transfer to skills?
Audio, video, archives such as .zip and .rar, legacy Office formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) and GitHub files. If a Gem's files exceed the 100 MB per-skill cap, the largest are dropped first. You can download them until December 17, 2026.
What happens to Gems on Google Workspace accounts?
On business and enterprise accounts, Gems move to the Settings panel on November 17 and keep working until at least March 1, 2027. Education accounts keep them until at least June 1, 2027. Admins get at least 30 days' notice before automatic migration.
Can I create a skill on my phone?
You can use skills in the Gemini mobile app and ask Gemini in a chat to create one. Creating a skill by uploading files or a SKILL.md package currently works only on the web and in the Mac app.
Will my shared Gem links keep working?
No, they stop with the Gem, and skills cannot be shared yet; Google says sharing is coming in the next few weeks. If teammates rely on a Gem, keep a copy of its instructions and files where they can find them.
